Hello everybody! The second day in Haiti has been marked by great emotions. We have seen striking scenes with littered streets, workers trying to pick up a shovel and sometimes barefoot. Our minibus was a hard fight their way through the streets has made more narrow because of debris piles, cars returned, concrete and rocks that dot the road.
Haitians trying to survive by selling what they can in the street and found the full range of traditional occupations: shoemaker, dealer cane sugar, fruit and vegetables, etc.. Of buildings that had to be beautiful before the earthquake, as the Presidential Palace, are completely destroyed. Robert Lessard, a member of the Expe-mission has discovered a small little places he had known before and he was unable to recognize certain streets. As expected, we went to visit the children and teachers from the School Mark Bourque. What a feast they had prepared us! Funds that had already been given in advance were used to rebuild the walls inside the school, paint and buying offices and uniforms for hundreds of students.
ascension to the school was challenging due to the extremely slippery rock on a trail very impractical. We met in passing villagers who gathered around the school to attend this meeting Quebec-Haitian. On our arrival, after a walk of 45 minutes under an oppressive humid heat, we were greeted by music and broad smiles of children. They've concocted a session that highlighted the talents of everyone: singing, dance, theater and poetry. We were moved to tears. The visit was due to be curtailed because of the announcement of the approach Hurricane Thomas.
It took us down very quickly because the country is on red alert as heavy rains are announced and the descent will be even more perilous. Haitian police have kindly escorted to our homes, still in the crush of traffic over the total. We feel safe here and the Haitians are delighted to hear us greet with the 2-3 of creole words that we learned!
